Where SERPS make sense

Checking  backlinks is a very important part of most SEO specialists.  Whether it is to spy on a competitor, or just to check exiting links to a client’s site, the process can take a lot of time and resources.  In this post we would like to look at a few online tools, providing this functionality.  If you have any other suggestions, please let us know.

Yahoo Site Explorer
http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

This is probably one of the most used Backlink checkers on the internet.  It might not give you enough detail and limit you to only 1 000 results, but it will still give you a good indication of who is linking to a specific site.

Links Rank
http://www.linksrank.com/

Links Rank is up and running for only a few months now, but if your site is already indexed by this site, you will see exactly which domains are linking to your site.  You can also see the Anchor Text and the number of times they have been linked with.  This site does not give you the exact pages the links are coming from, but I’m sure they will add this functionality in the future.

Open Site Explorer
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/

Open site Explorer, is also a very nice tool, but you need to subscribe to be able to use all of the functionality of the site.  Again, they have a large database of pages already indexed, and you can also see the anchor text used for each link.

Please tell us which tools you are using to check backlinks.

This is usually a difficult question.

New Sites

Submitting your site through the Google Add Url link: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl usually takes 2-6 weeks.  So there must be better ways.

Ask your best friend with a Good quality site to link to you.  Make sure the site / page he / she is linking from is related to your site.  This usually ensures that Google will index your site within 2 days or less.  I’ve also seen that some of our clients’ sites, are indexed within 12 hours.

If your site is not indexed in 1 week using this technique, there might be something else wrong with the Domain or Site.  Make sure Google can actually crawl the site.  Also if the domain was purchased from someone else, it might also be banned for some other reason.

For Sub Domains

I’ve seen new sub domains being indexed within 4 hours from the first link being created on the web.  Again this really depends on how often Google will index referring site.

Warning:

Do not create too many links to your new site.  This will seem unnatural, and you might just get penalized or banned in Google.

How about pages?

Again it depends on how often Google index your site and how often the site change.  If you add a new page every hour, Google will probably check your site every hour, and new pages will be indexed on a more frequent basis.  Please note that you might not yet rank very high on Google for the keyword / phrase you have optimized for.  It will obviously take a bit longer for Google to place your site in the highest rankings.  This blog site usually takes about 2 minutes for pages to appear in Google.  Check out the secret below.

A Little Secret

WordPress is using Ping-o-Matic to tell Google of new pages on your blog site.  However, nothing stops you from doing this manually on the Ping-o-Matic site.

Conclusion

New sites are indexed by Google within 4 hours and 6 weeks.  It all depends on the quality (authority) of back links.  Depending on how frequent your site change, new pages can be indexed within minutes or a couple of days from appearing on your site.

We often get the question:

Is it possible to rank in the top 10 rankings if I cant get thousands of links?

In short, yes. Links are important to rank high on Search Engines.  But it it definitely not just the number of links.  The Link Strength is more important.  In other words, the authority of the site linking to your site.

Lets take a few examples:

Keyword: Property

On the day of writing this post (2011/05/17), 3 of the domains ranking for the highly searched keyword “Property” ranking in the top 10 positions have less that 10 000 links.

e.g.

Keyword: Sell Link Ads

Lets take a look at one of most sought after keywords in the Link Building industry.  All of those websites trying to tell you that you to buy thousands of back links to get good rankings in Search Engines, should consider rephrasing that statement.  For the keywords /  phrase “Sell Link Ads” you will find that:

Conclusion

When you acquire, borrow, exchange, steal, beg and buy links, please make sure they come from a good site (site with authority).  Easiest way is to check their rankings within webstatschecker.com.  Even better for your site is if they already rank for the same keywords you are optimizing for.  Use WebStatsChecker.com to check the current positions of sites to make sure you really need links from them.  Please note however, we do not have all of the keywords indexed in our database, so please search additional keywords.

Have you ever wondered what importance your domain name plays when you want to rank for a specific keyword within Google.com.

We have used  our database and preselected more than 100 000 keywords to check some stats.

On the day of writing this Blog (2011/05/17)  we have found the following:

For Single Word Domains and Keywords (Keyword and Domain match exactly):

No 1 Positions:

  • 14.65% of all of the domains ranking in position 1 consists out of only one keyword in their domain name  e.g. proxy.org ranks no 1 for proxy.
  • 8.8% of .com domains ranking in position 1 have exactly the same keyword in their name e.g. tomtom.com ranks no 1 for tomtom
  • 1.29% of .org domains ranking in position 1 have exactly the same keyword in their name e.g. kid.org ranks no 1 for kid
  • 0.63% of .net domains ranking in position 1 have exactly the same keyword in their name e.g. php.net ranks no 1 for php

Top 100 Positions:

  • 47.13% of all of the domains ranking in the top 100 positions consists out of only one keyword in their domain name  e.g. engineering.com ranks no 2 for engineering.
  • 23.78% of .com domains ranking in the top 100 positions have exactly the same keyword in their name e.g. engineering.com ranks no 2 for engineering

  • 6.49% of .net domains ranking in the top 100 positions have exactly the same keyword in their name e.g. mip.net ranks no 4 for mip

Conclusion

When selecting your domain name, it is best to select a domain name with exactly the same keyword and your most important keyword.  Even better would be a domain name with a .com TLD.

Check your stats on WebStatsChecker.com and let us know how your site is performing.
